Papillon
- Origin
The Papillon was originally developed for noblewomen during the period of the Renaissance. The breed was developed by crossing existing toy breeds with spaniels. Thus their athletic abilities and agility come from their sporting-spaniel blood. They were refined and popularized in Italy and Spain.
- Feeding
Papillon is known to pile on the pounds! As such, a diet consisting of biologically appropriate protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals are essential for them. A suitable diet can consist of ground bone and vegetables. Check out the Dog Kennels in Perth.
- Hair Care
The dog’s outward appearance depends on its gut health, digestion, stress, and strain on organs and bodily systems. Raw natural diet is proven to improve its coat health, hair loss, and the shine of the fur.
- Specific Needs
Even though they are lap dogs, they have a high need for exercise and the potential for playfulness. They love human companionship. A Papillon is not for you if you’re away from home for most of the day!
Mini Poodle
- Origin
Being the national dog of France, the Poodle was the favourite of the French and other European nobles. However, the breed originated in Germany around 400 years ago. The Poodle was, and still is, a magnificent retriever.
- Feeding
Free-feed very young puppies and 3-month onwards start 3 meals plus snacks. Adults can be fed 2 – 3 meals per day. Feed your Poodle 1 oz of home-cooked food for 1 lbs of body weight. Ensure that it contains meat proteins, fruits, vegetables, cheese and eggs. Avoid raw meat, dried fruit, fried food, onions and garlic.
- Hair Care
Daily brushing removes loose hair, dirt and mats on your pet. Ensure shampoo is not left on your pet’s fur, as it may cause skin irritation. Letting your poodle’s hair air-dry will result in tight little curls that tangle easily. As such, fluff-drying is the best. Check out the Dog Kennels in Perth.
- Specific Needs
Poodles need professional grooming every 6 – 8 weeks and a bath between grooming appointments. They also require adequate exercise. Field events, hunting, tracking and agility exercises are excellent options to keep them mentally and physically active.
Pomeranian
- Origin
The Pomeranian was first bred in England in the mid-19th century. However, back then it was a large dog breed only in white colour. Pomeranians are descendants of the Arctic work dogs from the Pomeranian regions of Poland and Northern Germany.
- Feeding
Feed your Pomeranian wholesome food, rich in essential nutrients. The amounts depend on the age, size, metabolism and activity level of your dog. Recommended amounts are as follows;
-
- ½ cup – 1-pound puppy
- 1 cup – 3-pound puppy
- 2 cups – 6-pound puppy
- ¼ cup – ½ cup – adult (split between two meals)
Avoid feeding the Pomeranian immediately before going to bed.
- Hair Care
Brush your dog’s coat at least twice per week with a slicker brush to keep fur mats, loose hair and dirt at bay. Bathe at least once a month, using a good quality dog shampoo and a detangling conditioner. Blow-dry the fur completely. Check out the Dog Kennels in Perth.
- Specific Needs
The high energy levels of Pomeranians require them to be fed at regular intervals. These are very affectionate dogs toward their pet parents and like to be close to humans. They love to be cuddled, scratched and petted.
Scottish Terrier
- Origin
The Scottish Terrier originated in Scotland and was totally unknown outside of their homeland until the late 1870s. They were bred for vermin control on farms and for hunting.
- Feeding
Terriers do well on a moderate-protein diet (mid-20% protein) with a bit of an additive, such as canned food. Avoid feeding them with people food. Feed them with a kibble formulated for small breed dogs. This will best meet your Scottish Terrier’s nutritional needs.
- Hair Care
Bathe your pet every 6 – 8 weeks as she is a wire/broken-coated dog. Regular brushing will keep her away from matting and debris from outdoors. Ideally, their coat is hand-stripped and the process should be started when they are young puppies.
- Specific Needs
The Scottish Terrier is well suited to apartment life. However, they should be given daily walks and frequent play sessions. A fenced yard is a must as the Scottish Terrier has a strong chase instinct. Every 6 months they should be professionally groomed.
Note: The Scottish Terriers are not recommended for homes with small children or other animals. Check out the Dog Kennels in Perth.
Schnauzer
- Origin
The Schnauzer has a lineage going back to the 15th century or before. The German farmers bred them to work as fearless barnyard ratters. Today, with their ratting days long behind, they are known to be charming companions and steady winners at dog shows.
- Feeding
The Schnauzer does well on high-quality dog food. It could be commercially manufactured or home-prepared with your veterinarian’s supervision and approval. Feed your Schnauzer according to his age (puppy, adult or senior), calorie consumption and weight. Clean, fresh water should be available at all times.
- Hair Care
Frequent brushing, combing and grooming are required for a Schnauzer to look its best. Some of its wiry topcoats can be regularly (every 5 – 8 weeks) stripped by hand or trimmed by a groomer. You can bathe your pet once a month.

Maltese Shih Tzu
- Origin
Centuries ago, Chinese imperial breeders developed the Shih Tzu centuries ago by crossing two older Sino-Tibetan breeds, namely the Lhaso Apso and the Pekingese. For hundreds of years, the breed lived a royal life, hidden behind the palace walls until the 1930s. Later it was refined in England and Peking.
- Feeding
The Shih Tzu can be fed commercially manufactured or home-prepared high-quality dog food. It should be prepared keeping in mind the dog’s age, calorie consumption and weight, with supervision and approval of the veterinarian. Ensure clean, freshwater is available at all times.
- Hair Care
Daily brushing and a bath every 3 – 4 weeks will keep your pet’s coat clean and at its best. His moustache and topknot should be combed daily. The Shih Tzu looks adorable when clipped into a “puppy trim” by a professional groomer.
- Specific Needs
As these are people dogs, praise and rewards work best in training them for desired behaviours. Early socialization and puppy training classes are recommended for your Shih Tzu. This will help him to become a well-adjusted and well-mannered companion.
Jack Russell Terrier

- Feeding
The Jack Russell Terrier requires a diet filled with high-quality ingredients to keep up with their energetic activity. However, accidental overfeeding should be avoided as they tend to ravenously eat any food you place before them! The following are some quality home-made dog food that the Jack Russell thrives on;
-
- Chicken & Quinoa
- Beef & Barley
- Lamb & Brown Rice
- Hair Care
The Jack Russell Terrier comes with 3 different types of coat; smooth coat, broken coat with a smooth undercoat and rough coat featuring a long, dense undercoat with long wire hair. The smooth-coated Russell sheds the most but requires less grooming. On the other hand, the rough-coated one sheds less but requires manual stripping.
- Specific Needs
Finding an outlet for their high energy levels and robust personality is an important need for this breed. As such, they will make excellent pets for an outdoorsy family who takes lots of hikes, bike rides and long walks. Finding games that they love to play will keep the brain and body of these dogs well-exercised.
Chihuahua
- Origin
The Chihuahua is among the oldest breeds of the Americas. Being the national symbol of Mexico, it traces its lineage to the ancient kingdoms of per-Columbian times. The Chihuahua was refined during the 12th century by the Aztecs. In the mid-1800s the Americans began to take an interest in the breed.
- Feeding
Feed the Chihuahua with high-quality dog food consisting of all the nutrients that meet the needs of the breed. The quantity of the food should be appropriate to the dog’s age (puppy, adult or senior). Avoid feeding your pet cooked bones and food with high-fat content.
- Hair Care
The two coat varieties of Chihuahua have different grooming needs. The smooth-coated one needs only occasional brushing and regular baths. On the other hand, the long-haired one requires his coat brushed at least weekly to avoid tangles or mats.
- Specific Needs
The Chihuahua loves trotting around, following their humans. It is usually adequate exercise for this breed, as their exercise needs can be met in a very small space! Short, slow walks help your pet keep in good condition and appropriate weight. However, avoid overexerting the Chihuahua. It is time to pick him up and carry him home if he is panting and working hard to keep up!

Correct socializing
Correct socializing with other dogs and people is essential for having a pet that is happy, healthy, and well-adjusted in the long run. Your furry family member may be spending extended amounts of time alone at home for the first time in a long time, and the stress of being alone may result in anti-social behaviors like as destructive chewing, persistent digging, excessive barking, or other indicators of separation anxiety.
